GINGERS - Give a tropical feel

main bamboo image

Shown above is Ginger Lily Josie - the biggest here and the first every year to flower -Its wonderful to see all the gingers come into bloom when the temperatures rise and some have the most incredible perfume.  Many though don't grow too well in Southern areas so trial them by all means but don't expect a good result with the Stenophyllts and the shampoo gingers.

They are a plant that likes good composty soil and mulching regularly.  Give them some organic matter and fertiliser so they can work their magic.  Cut back in Winter any old dead foliage at the base.
Some gingers are deciduous (shampoo and variegated varieties usually - Costus are not - and will die away to nothing in the cold months only to break through again in the Spring just when you thought they were gone forever !  TIP:  Its a good idea to mark where they are planted so you don't disturb that ground - do it now while they are still obvious.

The hardest varieties are the Alpinias which don't suffer too much from harsher climates.

POSTAGE OF GINGERS -  SOME WILL BE SENT BAREROOTED OR CUT DOWN DUE TO SOFT NATURE OF FOLIAGE.
