Alphonse Karr
Bambusa Multiplex var.
Stunning smaller multiplex variety growing more upright than most.
Features yellow culms with green stripes. New young shoots are tinted pink. Fine dark green leafs. When mature clump is leafless at base with foliage higher up. Impenetrable tough screen when mature with culm diameter of 2.5 cm. Confined against a fence or wall it will grow straighter than most Multiplex bamboos. Often seen in landscaping mazagines and used on many popular TV garden makeover programmes - gives a golden glow to a garden.
Hardy - will tolerate sun/sea and poor soil. Grows 3-4 metres. In humid hot climates can be susceptible to sooty-mould, but with annual pruning of old growth and a quick spray with an organic pest oil this problem is solved. Not relevant in Southern areas.
